Newport Beach Courthouse Cites 4
On Aug. 3, Orange County Sheriff deputies cited 4 people for attempting to drive, without licenses, after their DUI hearings. Deputies staked out the Newport Beach courthouse looking for people who were going to drive after being explicitly told not to and after their licenses were suspended. The deputies followed 15 suspects from their hearings to the parking lot, according to a news release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
As reported by the Sheriff’s Department, 5 of the 15 people got into vehicles and attempted to drive off as soon as they left the courthouse. Those who attempted to drive were stopped by waiting deputies. Deputies gave misdemeanor traffic citations to four of the drivers and then impounded their vehicles.
Funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has been periodically performing this type of sting at the Newport Beach courthouse in an effort to deter drivers from being on the road when they should not be.
What if I’m caught driving on a suspended license after my DUI?
Driving on a suspended license is a serious charge. But the penalties are even worse when your license is suspended because of DUI. Any additional offenses after your original DUI charge greatly increase the likelihood of your receiving a jail sentence, especially if you have serious charges pending when you attempt to drive on a DUI suspended license.
Possible penalties you could face are as follows:
- Up to 6 months in jail
- A fine up to $1,000
- Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Installation in Vehicle
- Mandatory minimum 10 days in jail
- Plus officer will impound your car on the spot
What does this mean? Your vehicle will be:
- Put on a 30 day (for a first time offense)
- You will have to pay the storage fees while it is impounded
- Your fines and punishments will get progressively worse each time you are caught and can eventually end up with your car being seized and sold at auction
